How To Decrease Your Portion Sizes For Optimum Weight Loss

You may even be exercising regularly, but are you getting the results you are after? If your answer is no, you are probably over consuming calories even if you don’t think you are.

Here are some great tips that will help you decrease your portion sizes to help you get the results you want:

  • Drink at least 2L water daily and if you are having junk food cravings drink at least 2 full glasses of water before you even think of giving in!
  • Eat your main meal in entrée size plates, make sure your bowls are also mini-research shows that the smaller the plates, glasses etc you eat and drink from, the less food (and calories you will consume) — Can’t argue with evidence!
  • Do not buy ‘FAMILY SIZE’ anything! Doing so makes people consume more of whatever is found in such packaging whether it is cereal, chocolate, M&Ms, washing detergent and so on! If you do buy anything in large containers because of cost savings be sure to re-distribute it into small ones for the purpose of everyday use. This will be the big saving in the long term.
  • Buy individually wrapped treats or foods that would be best only to have very small portions and stick to only one small portion e.g. if you ‘can’t live’ without chips, then have a mini size packet instead of a regular size, and the same goes for chocolates treats or anything else you really “must have” but know can sabotage your weight loss efforts.
  • If you keep lollies and other treats at home and you are trying to lose weight, get them out of sight. ‘Displaying’ them on your coffee table and other areas “for visitors” will only make you eat more.
  • Be sure your cookie jar is not made out of clear glass. If you have one ensure it is definitely not see through! Out of sight is out of mind and off your waist!
  • If you have a treat jar on your desk, remove it and put it inside the filing cabinet at work—scientific studies show people simply will not get up to attack it—mostly because they forget it is even there.
  • Another trick to ensure you eat less at main meal times is to have a cup of broth 10 minutes before your main meal.
  • Consciously decide to eat less and start re-training your appetite.
  • Eat slowly and chew each mouth full about 30 times before swallowing—not only will your digestion be better for it but your brain will have time to recognize there is actually already food in your stomach and that you don’t need to eat anymore. For more great tips and tricks on eating more consciously the easy way, pick up a copy of Mindless Eating: Why We Eat More Than We Think — a great read!
