An increasing number of people are choosing non-surgical injections over the classic “face lift.” These treatments are cheaper, faster, and minimally invasive and most importantly are marketed as “safe.” There is no serious down time, no incisions or stitches and only a local anesthetic. Tempting isn’t it?
While less dangerous and painful than having surgery, instant beauty does have an ugly side. The now famous Botox Cosmetic is under increased scrutiny, and some health watch groups are insisting that it come with a special “black box” warning to increase patient awareness about the risks involved. Botox (Botulinum Toxin Type A) is a purified form of deadly bacteria called Clostridium botulinum, which is the same bacterium that causes severe and sometimes fatal food poisoning. It is a powerful neurotoxin, which works by blocking the nerve impulses. Technically it paralyzes the area of the skin where it is injected; if administered properly this generally lasts several months. It has been found to weaken the facial muscles and cause muscular atrophy in the treated area. If administered by an unskilled practitioner, the patient could get droopy eyelids or a surprised, frowning or otherwise undesirable expression. Another problem is the possibility of the toxin spreading to other tissues and organs; when injected into the faces of lab rats it spread into the brains causing damage. Adverse reactions to Botox include flu-like symptoms, nausea, pain, respiratory problems, and difficulty swallowing or allergic reactions. Its effects on pregnancy or those who are nursing are unknown (usually meaning it should be avoided), and such persons are strongly advised against the injections.
As if these concerns weren’t enough, patients now have to worry about bootleg drugs. Loosely enforced regulations and outright greed of both suppliers and doctors have resulted in an ever growing counterfeit pharmaceuticals industry. Counterfeit drugs are deadly, as they are usually not made of the substance being prescribed. Specifically, counterfeit Botox is extremely hazardous; it is not processed and purified according to appropriate standards, and can paralyze or kill the recipient.
There are alternatives to Botox, called dermal fillers. They do not paralyze the muscles; instead, they simply fill lines, dimples, scars, lips and such. Harmful effects tend to be less frequent and include granuloma, bacterial infection, bruising, ulcerations, asymmetry and allergic reaction. People infected with herpes could experience a reactivation of symptoms.
Below is a brief list of dermal fillers:
| Restylane, Perlane | (Hyaluronic Acid- NOT derived from animals) |
| Hylaform | (Hyaluronic Acid- Derived from rooster combs) |
| Juvederm | (Hyaluronic Acid- Synthetic) |
| Sculptra | (Poly-Lactic Acid- Synthetic) |
| Radiesse | (Calcium Hydroxyl Apatite- Synthetic) |
| Collagen | (Bovine Collagen- Derived from cow hide) |
Being in optimum health, reducing the effects of free radicals on cells, having increased nutrient stores in the body—particularly anti-ageing nutrients, decreasing stress and negative emotions can all have a fantastic preventative effect and reduce the need for potentially negative interventions. Meditation has also been shown to reverse the physical and physiological signs of ageing. It’s worth a try!
