Problem Solving Skills: A Seven Step Plan

Paul Bayley — Individual and Relationship Counsellor

We are all creatures of habit when it comes to solving problems.

Without realising it, we normally approach a problem in the same way each time.

When faced with a challenge most people immediately move into ‘fix it’ mode and miss out a number of vital steps in problem solving.

This is understandable, because in the workplace we are often encouraged and rewarded for coming up with a solution.

How often in the workplace do we hear our bosses using the phrase “I don’t want problems, I want solutions.”

However, the problem with this ‘fix it’ approach is that it often doesn’t explore the opportunities that a problem can present.

Resolving problems is a skill which can be learnt, adapted and developed and the more we use it the better we become at it.

One of the methods I use for assisting my clients is a seven step approach to problem solving, which gives them a structure to work with.

1. Clearly identify the problem
2. Fully understand and explore the problem
3. Decide on the desired outcome
4. Look at your options
5. Select an option
6. Implement the option
7. Evaluate the effectiveness of the solution

1. Clearly Identify the Problem
It is often useful to write the problem down as it makes it clearer. Talking with a trusted friend or colleague can also be incredibly useful.

2. Fully Understand and Explore the Problem
When you move into this step you will often find that what you at first saw as the problem can often turn out to be a symptom. So, you need to work out what the actual problem really is, and not waste time trying to resolve the symptom.

3. Decide on the Desired Outcome
Missing out on this step is a lot like sailing out to sea without a map and no destination in mind. Without a goal it’s really difficult to get “there” – wherever “there” is.

4. Look at the Options
I often find my clients becoming stuck at this point. They can think of only one or maybe two options. I point out to them that there are always three or more possibilities (including doing nothing). When you find yourself in this situation you could consider talking to a friend and asking them if they can see any other options, alternatively you could try sleeping on it. I come up with some of my best ideas when I first wake in the morning after wrestling with a problem the previous day.

5. Select an Option
When you hear people suggesting that you write down a list of all the pros and cons of the situation, this is the step they are describing. You need to fully understand the implications of any decision you are about to make.

6. Implement the Option
Once you have a clear goal and a strategy for getting there life can become a lot less stressful.

7. Evaluate the Effectiveness of the Solution
Looking back and evaluating the effectiveness of your solution is always a worthwhile exercise for honing your problem solving skills. It’s a well known fact that the more you practice the more skilled and effective you become

This seven step model is a great basic problem solving strategy and it is entirely flexible. It does though have its limitations. If you try to apply it to relationship issues between a couple then it can become rather cumbersome and not all that effective. I’ll address a strategy that is quite effective for relationships in a later article.
